November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month

Hospice and palliative care is in my opinion not understood very well. We reached out to Family Hospice of Boulder, Colorado and asked them to share an article about Hospice with our November 2012 eNewsletter. Jerry Kopack, Co-founder, Family Hospice and Family Hospice Foundation gladly agreed to submit an article.

His article entitled "Hospice: The Best Kept Secret in Healthcare" focuses on how misunderstood hospice services are by both consumers and professionals serving seniors.

Here is an excerpt ...

“So why is hospice the best kept secret in healthcare?” he asked.

I continued by telling him that “while a patient is on hospice, they receive regular nurse visits to manage pain and symptoms, hospice aide visits for personal care needs, and support services from a social worker and chaplain. In addition, they receive 24 hour on-call availability from a registered nurse so that if there is a crisis in the middle of the night or on a weekend, a nurse will make a visit to them. Also, all of the medications, medical equipment and supplies related to their hospice diagnosis are covered as well. Finally, all of this is provided in the comfort of the patient’s home. Yes, a patient can remain in their own home.”

Please visit Jerry Kopack's article and read more - "Hospice: The Best Kept Secret in Healthcare."

Also check out the Seniors Resource Guide eNewsletter where we featured the article from Family Hospice - Colorado Front Range News & Events. We have other educational articles posted.

In regard to hospice and palliative care, explore the topic and ask questions before need arises. And Kudos to Jerry Kopack and his company for how they serve families in Gilpin County, Boulder County and the surrounding areas of Colorado.
