Don't Forget - Medicare Open Enrollment ends December 7, 2012

We want to share a reminder that Medicare Open Enrollment ends December 7, 2012. This year it runs from October 15 through December 7th. Why is this important? Medicare Open Enrollment is a time to compare your current plan with other options available in 2013. You may find coverage that is better quality for your needs or lower cost. You can find more information on www.medicare.gov and you can call Medicare at 1-800-633-4227 (TTY 1-877-486-2048). Also visit the Medicare Basics Video Series for an overview.

Short Term Care Insurance

Has anyone noticed the new short term care insurance? This is a new kind of care insurance that is for short term care. These policies are less expensive than traditional long term care insurance. Raymond Smith a Long Term Care Specialist has written an article on this topic and it is posted on Seniors Resource Guide. The article is called "New Short Term Care Insurance; Why Did I Buy It For Myself?" - Use this link to view the article - Click Here

The 2012 U.S. Capitol Christmas is on its way to Wasington, D.C.

The 2012 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree was harvested on November 2 in Colorado. November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month

Hospice and palliative care is in my opinion not understood very well. We reached out to Family Hospice of Boulder, Colorado and asked them to share an article about Hospice with our November 2012 eNewsletter. Jerry Kopack, Co-founder, Family Hospice and Family Hospice Foundation gladly agreed to submit an article.

His article entitled "Hospice: The Best Kept Secret in Healthcare" focuses on how misunderstood hospice services are by both consumers and professionals serving seniors.

Here is an excerpt ...

“So why is hospice the best kept secret in healthcare?” he asked.

I continued by telling him that “while a patient is on hospice, they receive regular nurse visits to manage pain and symptoms, hospice aide visits for personal care needs, and support services from a social worker and chaplain. In addition, they receive 24 hour on-call availability from a registered nurse so that if there is a crisis in the middle of the night or on a weekend, a nurse will make a visit to them. Also, all of the medications, medical equipment and supplies related to their hospice diagnosis are covered as well. Finally, all of this is provided in the comfort of the patient’s home. Yes, a patient can remain in their own home.”

Please visit Jerry Kopack's article and read more - "Hospice: The Best Kept Secret in Healthcare."

Also check out the Seniors Resource Guide eNewsletter where we featured the article from Family Hospice - Colorado Front Range News & Events. We have other educational articles posted.

In regard to hospice and palliative care, explore the topic and ask questions before need arises. And Kudos to Jerry Kopack and his company for how they serve families in Gilpin County, Boulder County and the surrounding areas of Colorado.

Palliative Care for Pets

I want to highlight an article posted on www.SeniorsResourceGuide.com that is from Dr. Jessica Pierce. She has written a book called “The Last Walk: Reflections on Pets at the End of Their Lives.” The book is about the challenges we face as our companion animals grow old.

This is a great article in light of November being National Hospice and Palliative Care month. Please read Jessica's article - Palliative Care for Pets. There is a link to an excerpt from her book in the article and here is her website - www.jessicapierce.net

For those of you who are animal lovers and have a pet who is a long time family member or even one that is a new family member, read this book so you are prepared to offer your animal the best care possible when the time comes. I can share that this spring our family gave our Bouvier caring skilled nursing and then palliative care in the last few weeks of her life. As with a human palliative care, it was a gift of love from us to her. When the time came that we had to euthanize her, we were all there with her, loving her to the end - my husband, two college children and myself. We miss you Evie, but we know you are in a better place now and not in pain.

December 4, 2012 Colorado Gives Day

Don't miss the December 4, 2012 Colorado Gives Day. This is part of the campaign 24 Hours to Give Where You Live. I personally want to recommend 3 great non-profits that are registered - note that if you make a donation on 12-4-12 - then the organizations get some matching dollars. Here are three to check out:
Bessie’s Hope – Click Here
HealthSET – Click Here
The Senior HUB – Click Here

Check it out - and the system allows you to give before 12-4-12 but schedule the donation to happen on 12-4-12 so the non-profit gets the matching funds.
